How is a carpet woven?

How is a carpet woven?

The carpet is the pile surface that covers the base fabric with loop yarns on the surface of the normal fabric, and the loop yarns are obtained by manually forming links around the warp yarns. The yarns that form the pile surface are then pressed into the fabric with the aforementioned "Kirkit" tool and the carpet surface is moulded.

The hand-woven carpets are produced by weaving on special looms. This is a large hanger, the lower part of which lies on the floor and the upper part of which has various moving parts. The structure consists of interlocking thick rods. On the loom, the woollen threads are stretched tightly from top to bottom like the teeth of a comb.

The carpet is created over time by weaving in these threads. It is normally woven by one person, but a very large carpet can also be made by two people. These are called warp threads and are stretched so that they form two surfaces, one at the front and one at the back.

A rod, known as a varagele, is inserted between them, functioning as an interweave. The rod is moved up and down between the threads, leaving a gap between the threads of the back and front rows in which it is located. This is how the knotting is realised in carpet weaving.

On the carpet loom, the thread that runs across between the warp threads by leaving one of the wires at the front and the other at the back is called the weft thread. There is a separate force and order for its passage. When each row of knots is completed and the transverse weft thread is to be passed through, the double or single rows of threads are taken back by applying pressure to the force arrangement. When the knot row is completed, it is tightened with a kirk comb.

The kirkit, which is lowered from above, presses the row of knots between the two weft threads downwards and thus compresses them. If you are wondering how the carpet is woven, it is roughly created as follows.

How long does it take to produce a hand-woven carpet?

Today, hand-woven carpet models are produced in different square metre sizes. This is because they differ depending on the living space and people's wishes. There are both small and big models. Since hand-woven carpets are woven by people, there is no specific time in which they are made.

However, there is usually one person working on a carpet loom. In the case of a large carpet model, it can also be two people.

How can you recognise a handwoven carpet?

Although you might think that a machine-woven and a human-woven carpet are not comparable, they are completely different. If you know what to look for, you can easily understand it.

Hand-woven carpets have knots on the back, which are a sign. They are not symmetrical and are knotted after each loop. In addition, the motif on the front is also visible on the back. In contrast, machine-made carpets have no knots because they work automatically and the loop markings are motifs.

These can therefore be used to easily recognise the model of a hand-woven carpet. The regular sequence is also important. Hand-woven carpets are worked by people. As the motifs are applied one after the other, they may not be arranged in a regular order and may show differences. However, as the machines work automatically, they are more regular.

When you say how to recognise handwoven carpets, it is possible to make a decision without difficulty by evaluating all these factors.

How do you clean a hand-woven carpet?

So how do you clean a hand-woven rug? Although hand-woven carpets are high-quality and durable, they must be cleaned carefully and correctly. Otherwise, its structure can be damaged. In addition, the knots can wear out and unravel over time if they are not cleaned.

To avoid such situations and to be able to use the carpet for many years, shampoos that are specifically designed for hand-woven carpet models should be used. Excessive treatment of the carpet and the use of various chemicals will also damage the carpet. In addition, organic dyes can leak out, resulting in a faded appearance.

When mopping, you should act quickly, first cleaning the surface with clear water. A tampon should be applied with a soft towel. After the first rinse, natural soap or special shampoos should be used to completely clean the stain.

Can handwoven rugs be cleaned by companies?

A handwoven rug can be washed at home if you know how to wash it. If you don't have the time or don't want to take care of it, you can contact companies that wash rugs professionally.

If you inform these companies that your rug is handwoven, the company can wash the handwoven rugs in a special way and bring them back to you.
